Friday Khutbah: “Life Span as a Blessing”

May your Friday bring you blessings dear brothers and sisters!

The verse of the Quran I just recited declares: “Oh those who have faith! Do not challenge Allah and let everyone review what they have prepared for the eternal world…”1

In the hadith I recited our Prophet declares: “Appreciate the value of five things before they come before you: Appreciate life before death comes upon you, appreciate spare time above busy times, wealth opposed to poverty, youth opposed to old age and health opposed to sickness.”2

Brothers and sisters!

We entered a new Hijri year only a short while ago. Nowadays we are living through the final days of the Gregorian calendar. I year has gone from our lives. May Allah grant you a prosperous and auspicial life. Whether you observe the Hijri year or observe the Gregorian calendar what is important is how you have spent your days and the year. The moon which witnesses the passing of the time is a verse of Allah just as the sun is the verse of the Almighty. What is important is how we utilize our time which is the blessing offered to us by Allah. What is important is how we have spent every moment of our life which is an asset given to us by Allah and whether we have lived a life in line with the reason why we were created.

Dear brothers and sisters!

There is a short period that Allah has foreseen for us in life. We call that period “life span.” A life that has been wasted cannot be called a life span. Life span is the time that has been spent for goodness and beauty. Life span has to be crowned with humanitarian and moral wisdom. Life span is the time that has been spent with responsibility and faith performing benevolence.

Brothers and sisters!

Our Prophet (pbuh) declared “A human being cannot step away an inch from Allah as long as he or she replies to five questions by the Almighty.”3 The first question you have to reply is about the blessing called the life span.”عَنْ عُمْرِهِ فِيمَ أَفْنَاهُ”  How did you spend your life and where, how did you make use of your time, in short we will be questioned about our activities throughout our life.

Brothers and sisters!

The second question we will face on the Day of Judgment, وَعَنْ شَبَابِهِ فِيمَا أَبْلاهُ will be how and where we spent our youth. We should never forget this question because at times we tend to make the mistake putting off our duties to worship and perform good deeds until after our youth. Yet our Prophet (pbuh) describes the ideal young people as وَشَابٌّ نَشَأَ فِي عِبَادَةِthose who find joy and peace in worshipping Allah.

Dear believers!

On the Day of Judgment we will also be asked وعَنْ مالِهِ منْ أَيْنَ اكْتَسبهُ، وَفِيمَ أَنْفَقَهُ   what have you done with the wealth Allah granted you. The Almighty will ask where did you earn your money and how did you spend it. Did you obey the rules of permissible gains and forbidden gains. Have you helped the needy and the poor? The reason for this question is the fact that wealth, all assets, all opportunities and profits are all the blessings provided to us by Allah for safekeeping. These should never imprison our hearts and souls and our future.

Brothers and sisters!

The other question that we will face before the Almighty is وَعَنْ عِلْمِهِ ما عمل به  to do with science. On that day we will be asked: What good did you do with science? Did you use science for the good and benefit of humanity or did you transform your science for arms production? Did you use science to spread goodness or did you use it to create sedition, deceit and discord? Did science and knowledge become a guide for you to enhance your life, morals and human relations?

Dear brothers and sisters!

The end of a year also means the start of another year. So let us make this occasion a time when we question ourselves according to the hadith of our Prophet. Let us not forget that after a year when we have spent another period from our life span illegal actions and attitudes that do not contribute to human life does not befit a Muslim believer. Isn’t it sad that in the first hours of the New Year fanfare that has nothing to do with our culture and that belongs to other worlds have turned into extravagance and waste? Those are the hours when we should take account of sins and good deeds, goodness and evil yet we spend those times on gambling and lotteries that help us earn money without toil. That is extremely sad.

Brothers and sisters!

May Allah help us spend our remaining life more beneficial and prosperous than the life we have spent. May Allah spare us from living a life for which we cannot provide an account
