May your Friday be blessed dear brothers and sisters!

Eternal gratitude to Almighty Allah for bringing us together at this location at this hour of prayers, at the Friday prayers where Prophet Abraham started his struggle on the path of the Lord.

Dear brothers and sisters!

The city we are now in is not any ordinary city and ordinary settlement. This city is the heart of the Islamic civilization. This city is the sister of Mecca and Al Quds (Jerusalem). This city is the place where Prophet Abraham, who was described as a nation on his own, started his struggle on the path of Almighty Allah. We are at the location where Prophet Abraham put out the fire of Nimrod. This is the place where Abraham transformed the fire into peace. And this location brings together the scholars and wise men for three days. The scholars and wise men of the geography of our hearts will discuss for three days the universal messages of Islam which are peace, justice and freedom in this holy place of Urfa, the city of Prophet Abraham. In my Khutbah today I will share with you some paragraphs that deal with peace, justice and freedom.

Dear brothers and sisters!

The name of the peaceful Glorious Book is called “selam” peace. Peace is a global thought, a perspective to life, it is one of the most basic of terms. Peace has a moral. It has a law. It has a philosophy. That is why Almighty Allah told the believers in the verse of the Quran: يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا “Oh believers” “ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَٓافَّةًۖ  “Do not exclude anyone and as a whole head for peace, make peace rule your lives, do not veer off from peace.”

وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِۜ  “Do not follow the footsteps of the Satan.” اِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُب۪ينٌ because the Satan is openly your enemy.

In the hadith I will recite our Prophet declared:أفشوا السلام تسلموا “spread peace so you can live in peace.” Peace is the maxim of the Muslim believer. Peace is the greatest slogan of the Muslims. That is why when a Muslim comes across another Muslim he or she says “May Allah’s peace be with you” (es-selamu aleyküm). It means may peace be with you, you we only find peace in me. It is a declaration of peace. The Prophet of Allah has told us in a hadith:“  وتقرأ السلام على من عرفت ومن لم تعرف ” salute and call for peace to everyone you see whether you know them or whether they are a stranger.

Dear brothers and sisters!

To greet each other is not just a routine saying. The fact that we have been commanded to greet each other with a call for peace means we have a duty to spread peace around the globe. It is unacceptable that we greet each other but still feel hatred in our hearts. Peace is also the name of Almighty Allah. Pace is one of the beautiful names with which Allah is described. Our Lord is also called peace. When we complete our salaat we salute our right and our left sides. When we complete the salaat we give a promise to Allah: Beloved Allah, I promise that I will spread peace to the world “es-selamü aleyküm ve rahmetullah.” We salute all our brothers to our right and our left and in our prayer we say “esselamü aleyna ve ala ibadillahi’s sâlihin”, peace to all of us, peace to all the subjects of Allah.

When we complete the salaat we do not only salute but we also beg to Allah “Allahümme ente's selâm” dear Allah you are peace, “ve minke's selâm” peace comes from you, you bring peace.

Allah wants us to spread peace around the world.

Dear brothers and sisters!

We do not only salute each other but when we pass by the cemetery we salute the deceased and wish them peace as we say “oh the world of the believers, may peace be upon you, one they I will also join you” and thus we remind ourselves of our fate and also share our desire for peace to prevail in the world with the deceased.

Brothers and sisters!

Peace starts first in our hearts and souls. Those who are in peace with others are also at peace with themselves. The person will first be at peace with themselves and then with others irrespective of their race, color and geography and with those who are not tyrants. “فَلَا عُدْوَانَ اِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِم۪ينَ” we do not feel enmity to anyone but the tyrants. We look at everyone with peace irrespective of their beliefs, their religion, their race. We do not accept tyranny. We do not bow to the tyrants. “فَلَا عُدْوَانَ اِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِم۪ينَ” . We offer greetings and peace to everyone who is not a tyrant. We will first be at peace with ourselves, then with others and then with nature and the universe. Those who are at peace with themselves are regarded as free believers. Those who are at peace with others are righteous. Those who are at peace with Allah, those who at peace with the universe is at a state of peace as defined in the Quran and has obeyed Allah to the letter.

Dear brothers and sisters!

You need justice for peace to prevail in the world as justice guarantees property. Justice is the faith of the state and a guarantee for peace. Every believer has to be just and righteous. They will act with justice to others, even to the enemy because those who cannot judge the tyrant and who cannot offer justice to the tyrant cannot defend the oppressed. Those who are just and righteous has to be just and righteous to the tyrants. We should not allow slander and exaggeration, we should not allow torture. That is why our Prophet has ordered his forces during the war not to harm children, women, and men of religion who are praying, green trees and the harvest. The believer is required to be just and righteous even under the tough conditions of war. Islam is loaded with justice and mercy. Islam’s justice is a justice loaded with mercy. You cannot differentiate between mercy and justice in Islam.

Dear brothers and sisters!

Another value that is needed to spread peace in the world is freedom. The believer has to be free, you cannot have faith without freedom, you cannot be responsible without freedom. The struggle that Prophet Abraham started on these lands was a struggle on the path of Allah where the subjects of the Almighty will not be servants of others, it is a struggle where the subject of Allah is free. Freedom starts in the heart, it starts in the mind. The Almighty declares “اَرَاَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰهَهُ هَوٰيهُۜ ” “Have you seen the fate of those who call themselves god?” The greatest captivity is for people to become captive to their desires. The greatest freedom is when people rid themselves from being captive to their desires. The greatest freedom is for people to be servants of Allah. For those who are not servants of Allah will become servants of others.

Dear brothers and sisters!

There are three forms of freedom. One is physical freedom. The other is political and civilized freedom. The third is moral freedom. History shows us that those who lose their moral freedom and those who are captive to their own desires also lose their political and civilized freedoms, their physical freedoms. Freedom starts when people shed their captivity to their desires.

May Almighty Allah grant us peace in all the Muslim world and in the geography of our hearts. May Allah grant us the chance to uphold justice among ourselves, in our hearts, in our lands. May Allah help us as people who can use their free will to turn the Islamic lands into lands of peace, lands of faith.
