Khutbah of President of Diyanet Görmez at Sultanahmet Mosque…

Dear brothers and sisters,

As humanity, as the family of human beings, as dwellers of the earth we are witnessing some great pains. We are suffering unbearable miseries, we are witnessing great anguish. On the one side we are witnessing great sins being committed globally, we are seeing people suffering hunger and famine in the African continent who have been deprived by colonialism. In this continent that is blessed with great resources people are running after a drop of drinkable water. So many people are dying because of hunger and lack of water. On the other side we are hearing the screams of innocent children being killed by chemical weapons and toxic gases in the Syrian province of Idlib. On the one side a nice gathering of people are facing mass destruction in Arakan on the other side we are hearing the screams of mothers piercing the heavens. We are witnessing the cries of a father who embraces the dead bodies of hişs nine year old twins.

Dear brothers and sisters,

What is really sad is that humanity is indifferent and unmoved. What is even sadder is that humanity has shed its conscience. A greater disaster than the famine in Africa, a greater pain than famine is the famine of the hearts, the famine of mercy. The famine of compassion. What is worse than the screams of the children of Idlib is the fact that people have become indifferent to such tragedies and that humanity is turning a deaf ear to all this. The greater disaster that is engulfing all of us is the fact that humanity has closed its ears to the screams of these innocent children.

 Dear brothers and sisters,

In the verse of the Quran which I recited the Almighty declares: “Oh human beings protect yourselves from a disaster, when that disaster comes and finds you it will not touch the cruel, when we remain silent to the cruel and cruelty, when we decide not to hear the screams of innocent children and do not stand up to cruelty then torment engulfs us and we are all affected. You will all face the disaster. Beware that Allah’s wrath will be immense.

In the hadith I recited the Prophet declares “Cruelty is darkness. First that darkness sets in the hearts, it destroys the light of the heart, and sends you to oblivion on the Day of Judgment. Avoid the damnation of the oppressed because between Allah and the oppressed there is no barrier, no obstacle.

 Dear brothers and sisters,

What is really painful is the fact that all these murders, brutality and violence are being carried out under the watchful eyes of humanity. The real disaster that is engulfing all of us the insensitivity, the difference and lack of compassion that human being are displaying when they hear the screams of the victims and the oppressed. The real disaster is that these murders are being committed through the hands that are displayed at the United Nations like a theater act. Innocent children are being butchered when they extend their hands for a veto and when they extend their hands to accept a resolution innocent children, innocent people, innocent women and elderly continue to die.

 Dear brothers and sisters,

What is even worse for all of us as Muslims is that Muslims themselves are indifferent and insensitive to these atrocities. The insensitivity of Muslims who are representatives of the last blessed religion sent by the Almighty, a religion that preaches compassion and mercy even for harmful insects is hurtful. The silence of our oil rich Muslims, their insensitivity and indifference, the indifference of all our Muslim brothers and sisters really hurts us deeply.

Dear brothers and sisters,

So from the mimbar (Islamic altar) of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque let us call on all human beings: Oh human beings, oh humanity, do not allow humanity fall. Let us not lose the conscience and compassion that the Almighty has granted us. Do not remain silent to the screams of the children being choked to death by the Sarin gas. Or else that scream will burn all humanity. Those screams will send us to oblivion. Let us hear the screams of those mothers, or else those screams will destroy all of us.

Come and let us all question ourselves; Will humanity continue to have fun in those brilliant lights of our cities while next door in other places our Muslim brothers and sisters are being engulfed in darkness? Will the modern people continue to brag about the metropolis they have erected as civilizations in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Africa and Myanmar are being destroyed? Will people continue to live luxurious lives as people in other places cannot find medicine, a drop of water to drink, cannot find a crumb of bread to eat, when babies are being massacred with great violence? Will humanity, will the nation of Islam remain silent as the cruel enjoy their victories, while the oppressed gather and wait before barbed wires? Will be just swallow of pains and watch the people of power act? Shall we suffice by just lamenting, feeling sorry and simply cry? No we will continue to defend the rule of law, we will defend righteousness, and we shall continue to promote peace and fairness. We will do this so that humanity does not perish. With the will of Allah this beloved nation will continue to offer a safe haven for the oppressed and the needy and extend a helping hand to those who scream and are victims of injustices and cruelty. May Allah help humanity start hearing all these screams which will eventually destroy us all. May the Almighty Allah move the dark clouds hanging over humanity and help us rule the universe with love, affection, peace and justice and help fraternity prevail.
